Someone suggested I set up Adsense, just for the heck of it.   So I said, “Sure.  Why not?  There’s nothing to lose.”

And there’s barely anything gain either, as I would find out!

From Nov. 11, 2009 to Feb. 15, 2010 Adsense has earned me a whopping $0.31!

Is this a criticism of Adsense?    Definitely not!  There’s many people who earn a decent amount of money from Adsense and it’s tied to the content of the site— black hat sites that game the system not withstanding…

What I’m really saying is that I lead a life less than ordinary and I suck at blogging for commercial purposes.

BBC – Newsnight: Susan Watts: New flaws in chip and pin system revealed.

“We think this is one of the biggest flaws that we’ve uncovered – that has ever been uncovered – against payment systems, and I’ve been in this business for 25 years,” Professor Ross Anderson from the Cambridge University Computer Laboratory said.

“This is a flaw in a system that’s used by hundreds of millions of people, by tens of thousands of banks by millions of merchants,” he added.

Well this is certainly disconcerting.

A Cambridge University computer science team has found a low sophistication method to dupe payment terminals into thinking a transaction has been verified by a valid personal identification number (PIN) when any random sequence of numbers has been entered as the PIN.

This flaw makes it incredibly easy for criminals to use cloned credit and debit cards by eliminating the extra step of discovering PIN numbers through various means.

According to researchers, this is a general system flaw and isn’t limited to any particular bank or card issuer.

This online store is having an international customer appreciation special event where shipping is 50% off.    I figure it’s a good time to pick up a few things since discounted shipping doesn’t happen very often.

I order a few items and select EMS (Express Mail Service) shipping since it’s the fastest and the more reliable overseas shipping method.   I normally don’t use EMS because it’s very expensive but since it’s 50% off shipping, why not?   The shipping cost at 50% off will be almost the same as SAL (Sea-Air-Land) shipping costs but I get my stuff much sooner.

I had completely forgotten about the postal service’s new policy with regards to more aggressive inspection of overseas casual goods shipments shipped via EMS.   This means that the chances are far greater that one’s package will be inspected by customs and brokerage fees will be charged.

When all was said and done, the total cost to get the package to me (brokerage + original shipping fees) was about $23.    It was cheaper than the non-discounted EMS shipping I would have normally paid but it’s virtually half the value of the entire package and almost 3 times more expensive than what it would have cost me if I had stuck to my original plan and had the package shipped via SAL.

The picture at the top says it all.
